Ufuk Seçgel-Janus Material Handler Excavator
At Design Interviews
Interview with Ufuk Seçgel : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Ufuk Seçgel : The main idea is to design a heavy-duty work machine able to adapt to future workspaces. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Ufuk Seçgel : I wanted to achieve a vehicle design that looked different from the standart excavator designs. I wanted it to be a different vehicle. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Ufuk Seçgel : Around 2 months. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Ufuk Seçgel : It was a school project. So I think a bit of both. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Ufuk Seçgel : Recycling centers, construction companies and other material handling industries. .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Ufuk Seçgel : The design changes the anatomy of an excavator. It is out of the standart excavator design. The target audience wanted this vehicle to be different than other vehicle which are mainly used for construction work. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Ufuk Seçgel : Janus is the Roman god of beginnings and transitions. He is depicted as having two faces, one looking to the future the other looking to the past. This echoes with how the vehicle has two faces and also to me it echoes with the general concept of recycling. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Ufuk Seçgel : Having a travel and work mode and a rotating operator's cabin for transitioning between modes. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Ufuk Seçgel : I gathered knowledge from maintenance companies for these vehicles. The main knowledge I sought was the connection of the engine from the turret to the lower body of the vehicle. This knowledge enabled me to transfer the engine to the lower body and make the weight more balanced. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Ufuk Seçgel : It was especially difficult to get out of the standart design of these machines. .
